LT Auto Development Plan Shows China’s Dedication to Building a Competitive Auto Industry

On April 25, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) released the “Automotive Industry Medium-Long Term Development Plan”.  MIIT outlines the most important goals for the auto industry over the next ten years and published blueprints for NEVs, Connected Cars, and Fuel Efficient Vehicles. China plans to achieve this by continuing to focus on the development of sensors, chips, advanced electronics, new lightweight materials, high level manufacturing equipment and car parts.

 The 5 main goals include:

  • Breakthroughs in key technology
  • Make the entire automotive industry chain “Secure and Controllable”
  • Increase Chinese Brand Development and Recognition
  • Build a new industry ecosystem
  • Green Development to bring down fuel consumption

Section 3 “Breakthroughs in key areas, industry transformation”, Part 2 on Connected Cars, states that they will work with associations like the China Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance of Intelligent and Connected Vehicles (CAICV) and support the Auto Industry Joint Fund. R&D will be a major focus in the areas of telecoms spectrum, sensors, smart terminals, and operating systems. In data sharing, they plan to promote open data sharing, develop a data sharing mechanism between physical systems, people and cars, and establish a big data trading platform. Additionally, new testing procedures and trial zones that focus on environment verification, IoT, smart traffic, and smart cities will be expanded to better understand data collection, analysis, and management platform coordination. Standards work includes determining what equipment, car interface, and cybersecurity requirements will be implemented.
