MPS Seeks to Embed "Internet Police" Within Companies in China
Last week, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) announced new measures to strengthen Internet security regulation, including collaboration with cyberspace administrative offices and industry information technology departments to comprehensively promote information security multi-level protection and "internet police" for websites and internet companies.
According to a report on the State Council website, MPS held a security management working meeting August 4 with key national internet website and service companies to promote a series of measures for internet security management and internet society rule of law construction. The measures include:
- Establish an information security multi-level protection scheme to increase capacity for protection of personal information and to combat illegal website attacks
- Embed "internet police stations" within key website and internet companies, so as to gather timely information on cyber crimes and provide websites with service and guidance for security management and prevention
- Conduct comprehensive public online enforcement by internet police, and severely punish illegal cyber activities
