MIIT Minister Miao Wei Highlights Importance Of Big Data

On Oct 14, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) Minister Miao Wei published an article in the People's Daily highlighting the strategic importance of big data and data sovereignty.

In his essay, entitled "Big Data, Key Resources to Change the World," Minister Miao stated that big data would alter the way countries compete with one another, moving away from competition in capital, land and resources towards achieving competitive advantage in the capacity to analyze, process and use data.

Miao also highlighted the growing prominence of data sovereignty as an area of national security on par with protection of borders, the coastline and airspace.

Identifying big data as a key to demonstrating world leadership, particularly in manufacturing and cyberspace, Miao called for rigorous implementation of the China Manufacturing 2015 initiative, theInternet Plus Action Plan, and the State Council's Guidelines for Promoting Big Data Development.
