MIIT Kicks Off 5G R&D Planning
On January 7, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) hosted a 5G Technology R&D Kick-Off Meeting in Beijing. According to the official Xinhua News, more than 100 representatives attended the kick-off meeting, ranging from internet and terminal companies to systems and chip companies.
Related R&D will be coordinated by the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group, with research being led by the relevant National Science and Technology Major Project group. The focus of the research is to better understand and contribute to the international 5G standards-setting process.
According to the press release, China has identified 2016-2018 as the most critical period for advancing 5G related research and standardization, with the goal of achieving large-scale commercial adoption by 2020.
