As reported by THE PAPER, the Legislative Affairs Commission (LAC) of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee is working on new personal information related legislation, according to Wang Ruihe, Director of the Office for Economic Law at NPC.

Wang noted that currently, personal information protection provisions are spread across various laws and regulations, including the Decisions on Strengthening Network Information Protection (2012), the revised Law on Protection of Consumer Rights and Interests (2013), Amendment VII (2009) and Amendment IX (2015) to the Criminal Law and the General Provisions of the Civil Law (2017). Furthermore, the Cybersecurity Law (CSL) also includes guidelines on the collection, use and protection of personal information.
