U.S. Ambassador's IPR Roundtable Hosted in Beijing

 

On September 14, the US Embassy hosted the second session of the 2015 Ambassador's Intellectual Property Rights Roundtable with a theme of "Innovation in Action: Patents and Trade Secrets." Following an April event on copyright, Monday's event brought together more than 150 U.S. and Chinese government, academic and business leaders to discuss IPR and innovation issues.

 

U.S. Ambassador to China Max Baucus, in his keynote remarks, emphasized the importance to innovation of global cooperation and coordination in ensuring IP protection.

Commissioner of the State Intellectual Property Office Shen Changyu also provided keynote remarks, highlighting China's current efforts to amend its Patent Law and trade secrets legislation.

The Roundtable featured three panels:  

  • "Foundations of Innovation" which evaluated China's administrative and judicial reforms to improve patent and trade secret protection
  • "The Role of Patents and Trade Secrets in Economic Growth" which discussed how patents and trade secrets should keep pace with and contribute to an innovative economy
  • "Cross-Border Collaboration on Patents and Research" which focused on the challenges for technology commercialization and talent recruitment
