CAICT Released The 2016 Manufacturing Report Summary

CAICT released their 2016 ICT manufacturing report on China’s developments in hardware, software and IT services. ICT manufacturing is leading the overall technology innovation development. Currently, ICT manufacturing revenue represents 8% of total manufacturing revenue while R&D investments in ICT manufacturing represent 16% of the total and IPR represents more than 60% of the total industries.

With China's push for informatization and industrization integration, Internet + and China Manufacturing 2025, ICT manufacturing is not limited to a branch in the manufacturing industry, but is becoming the key fundamental area supporting traditional manufacturing transformation. As a key task of China Manufacturing 2025, intelligent manufacturing has created new demands in the areas of automation, network equipment, software, edge computing power, and mass data acquisition, and has driven the development of industrial robotics, industrial sensors, industrial network and industrial software among others.

The report highlights 3 areas of positive growth for China, including carrier network equipment, IT equipment and IC chip technology. While IC sales only grew 2% worldwide in 2015, international competition continues to rise. China’s domestic IC chip market grew at a rate of 20% YOY and 2015 IC exports were valued at $69 Billion. There was increased investment by foreign-funded enterprises in China’s IC market and Huawei achieved breakthroughs in developing a 16nm chip, putting them on an equal playing field with other competitors globally. China has also seen noticeable improvements in cloud equipment and smart terminals, but CPUs, storage, and sensor technologies are still weak.

The report also sites that an indigenous industrial ecosystem (自主产业生态) has not yet formed, but changes in industry have brought a lot of opportunity. In summary, technological development goals will focus on CPUs, OS, databases and applications as the key to remaining competitive in the future. All of these developments will help China achieve the goals laid out in the National Informatization Development Guidelines, China Manufacturing 2025, and the National Semiconductor Development Promotion Guidelines.
